The Medium Blog

--

Can you feel it? Something seems…different on Medium.

You’re not wrong. We recently rethought, redesigned, and reconfigured how you get around Medium, what you see here, and how it is presented to you.

Cool, huh? So let’s take a look at what’s new and different.

The Homepage Navigation Bar

Where the action is
  • First off, we decided to get crazy and put our name on the homepage.
  • You can search and start a new story directly from the homepage navigation bar.
  • If you have notifications, your activity button will turn orange. Click and you’ll see this:

You will receive notifications when people recommend or leave notes on your story, submit stories to your publications, or accept you into a publication.

You will no longer receive a notification if someone you follow has published. Instead, the story simply becomes part of your reading list.

  • Everything you need is behind your avatar:

Click your icon in the top right corner to start a new story, import from your old blog, access your drafts, published, and unlisted stories, view your stats, and search for publications.

You can also get to your profile page, Medium settings, and sign out.

Your Reading Lists

  • Home” is your personalized reading list. It is a real-time reverse-chronological feed made up of:
    - Stories published by the authors and publications you follow on Medium.
    - Stories recommended by people you follow on Medium.
    - A sampling of our Staff Picks, the best stories our editors have found for you on Medium. You can unfollow @MediumStaff to remove these stories from your feed.
  • There are seven curated channels based on these topics: Culture, Humor, Tech, Design, This Happened to Me, In My Humble Opinion, and Long Reads. Our editors are constantly scouring Medium, looking for quality stories to put into these categories.
  • On the right side of the homepage is a list of our current top stories.

This is an up-to-the-minute list of the Medium stories that are most recommended by our users.

  • You can also access your bookmarks directly from the homepage:

On every post page you have the option to bookmark that story for later reading. We are very familiar with the problem of too many good Medium stories, not enough time. ☺

Navigating and sharing around Medium

  • From wherever you are on Medium, if you click the “M” in the top left corner, it will bring you back to the homepage. Clicking the publication name will take you to the publication homepage.
  • At the bottom of every story, there’s an information bar:

From here you can view and click into the publication the story is part of(if any), click to the profile of the author, and view the read times and publish date.

  • Click the heart to recommend the story.

You can also click “others” for a complete list of who has recommended this story.

  • Bookmark the story to read it later. You can see your list of bookmarks on the homepage
  • Share the story on Twitter, Facebook, or by email.
  • Click “Read next” for the next story in your personalized reading list.

We will continue to work on your Medium experience, and would love to hear your feedback. Tell us what you think about these changes at yourfriends@medium.com.
