The Medium Blog

Yo Ben Werdmuller, yeah, I’d say there’s a pretty good chance.

Today is a very exciting day. We’re pleased to announce that Medium has launched a Publishing API.

We’ve built a great tool for writing. But it’s not our editor that creates the main value — Medium is, first and foremost, a network for connecting people and ideas.

With our Publishing API, you can now share your story on Medium from anywhere. It’s easier than ever to plug into our network and build your audience here. There are so many amazing stories, ideas, and perspectives shared here every day, and we want to make reading on Medium even better, with more avenues for content creators of all shapes and sizes.

For those who’ve already started things of your own, the Medium Publishing API gives you an easy way to share your content here too.

These stories, published on Medium from elsewhere, can now take advantage of our unique interaction layer. Our community of writers and thinkers will highlight, respond to, and recommend your work.

Reading on Medium is unique, because here you’re not alone. You can read, interact, and collaborate with others in our revamped iOS and Android apps. Your consumption experience is shaped by the people you follow, which is really powerful and provides more context when reading.

Desktop integrations

With our API, we’ve taken big steps towards meeting users where they already are. We’re excited to share that we’ve teamed up with a select few partners to bring Medium integrations to their products.

Byword is a simple and efficient text editing application. It gives you just the tools you need to write Markdown and rich text with as little friction as possible.

Byword provides a wonderful writing experience with Markdown, which already supports blog publishing to a variety of web platforms. Their Medium integration is coming in the next release of Byword’s iOS and Mac apps. So it doesn’t matter if you’re on the go or at your desk — you can always create in Byword and publish to Medium.

iA Writer

iA Writer is the quintessential writing machine for iOS, Mac and Android. Writer is designed so you can keep your hands on the keyboard and the mind in the text.

iA Writer, much like our editor, simply gets out of the way and lets you focus on the words. Their integration with Medium is coming soon.

Ulysses is an elegant but powerful writing app. Ulysses can be a typewriter and a desk, an office and a library, a typographer and your personal writing coach. It is used by journalists, bloggers, copywriters, novelists, screenplay writers as well as non-fiction authors and academics all over the world.

Ulysses is used by many authors, writers, and bloggers to self-publish today. They’ve built a great experience for creating beautiful documents — PDFs, web pages, ePubs — and you can now add Medium stories to that list. You’ll soon be able to download the new version of Ulysses from the Mac App Store, which will allow you to seamlessly connect your Medium account and share drafts directly to Medium.

WordPress is one of the most popular publishing tools on the web today, and we want to make it easy to connect all those awesome blogs to Medium. So we built a WordPress plugin that allows you to crosspost your blog entries here.

But this is all only the beginning. As thrilled as we are about all of these things, the more exciting part is what comes next. We can’t wait to see what you all build on top of our Publishing API, and how that can shape and enhance the Medium network.

Let us know what is and isn’t working for you by responding to this post below, or write us at To learn more about our Publishing API, check out our guide to getting started.
